BERKELEY – Former Golden Bear Daniela Holmqvist (2008-12) earned 2014 LPGA Membership and will fall in Category 17 after her top showing at the LPGA Stage III Q-School tournament at the par-72 Jones Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Sophia Sheridan (2002-06) also competed and earned Symetra Tour status after also making the 72-hole cut at the tournament.
Holmqvist earned her LPGA Membership after placing 44th overall at the final qualifying school tournament with a 90-hole score of 75-72-68-72-73=360 (E). One of three Swedish golfers to make the cut, Holmqvist displayed steady concentration to earn her card by birdying her final hole to secure a top-44 finish.
Entering the final round tied for 34th at 1-under, Holmqvist hit par on eight of her first nine holes before carding a birdie on her 10th (par-4, 1st) and 13th (par-4, 4th) holes of the day. However, a bogey on the par-4 7th and double-bogey on the par-4 8th threatened her prospects at earning her membership card. Facing immense pressure on her final hole of the tournament, Holmqvist birdied the par-5 9th to secure her status in the top 44.
The 2014 LPGA Tour begins on January 23 with the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.
Sheridan was one of just two Mexican golfers to make the 72-hole cut and finished tied for 54th with a 70-72-69-73-78=362 (+2), falling just two strokes out of earning LPGA Membership.
Sheridan was one of the most consistent golfers of the tournament and sat 18th after 72 holes at 284 (-4). Beginning the final round on hole one, Sheridan remained in contention for membership after hitting par on 12 of her first 15 holes, but finished the round with a 78 after hitting a double-bogey on the 16th and a bogey on the 17th.
All is not lost, however, as she qualifies for the Symetra Tour with her showing. The Symetra Tour begins in February 2014.
