BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team will host a FREE preseason exhibition game against Vanguard ta 8:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Cal women’s volleyball team at Haas Pavilion.

There is free general admission for the Vanguard exhibition game that follows Cal volleyball’s Pac-12 tilt against USC. Fans are encouraged to stay and attend both events Friday night. There will be a live stream of the women’s basketball game available on CalBears.com as well.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Cal has played an exhibition game against the 11-time NAIA Golden State Athletic Conference-champion Lions. This is Cal’s only exhibition contest of the season, however fans will also have the opportunity for another look at the Bears this Sunday with an open practice scheduled to begin with an introduction at 11 a.m. followed by practice in Haas Pavilion at 11:30 a.m.

The Bears open regular season next week on Friday, Nov. 8 against Long Beach State. That game will be the first of a doubleheader with the Cal men’s basketball team, who takes on Coppin State immediately after. Single game, season ticket and mini-plan packages are available through the Cal Athletic Ticket Office, online or by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS.

A LOOK AT THE GOLDEN BEARS
The Golden Bears went 32-4 last season and won a share of the first Pac-12 regular season title in program history with a 17-1 conference record. The Golden Bears return seven letterwinners and three starters, including preseason national player of the year candidates Brittany Boyd and Gennifer Brandon. Cal, preseason No. 9 in the USA Today Sports Preseason Coaches’ Poll, was tabbed to finish second in the Pac-12 in a vote by the league coaches.

A LOOK AT VANGUARD
The Vanguard Lions enter the season ranked No. 1 in the NAIA preseason poll after a 26-4 campaign last season. The Lions have made 12 consecutive postseason appearances and last year advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals with NAIA All-American Nicole Ballestero leading the charge. Based out of Costa Mesa, the Lions open the year with exhibitions against UCLA, California, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara before embarking on their search for a second national championship under coach Russ Davis.
