Rössler Cards 69 To Lead Golden Bears In Day Two at Stanford
PALO ALTO, Calif. – California senior Nicola Rössler shot a 2-under 69 Saturday to lead the Golden Bears in the second day of competition at the Stanford Intercollegiate held at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Golden Bears move up one spot to eighth on the team leaderboard with a score of 292-289=581 (+13)after 36 holes after shooting +5 as a team Saturday.
“Today was a little bit better day than our first round,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “We got off to a little bit of a rough start, but they rebounded really well on the back side. Hannah (Suh) and Lucia (Gutierrez) made about four or five birdies on the back, which was helpful. It was great to see us dig in really deep on the backside and as a team be two-under par.”
Rössler posted her best career round at the Stanford Golf Course to move to a tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard at an even-142 through 36 holes. The senior shot birdies on the 2nd, 4th and 9th with a lone bogey on the par-4 6th interrupting an otherwise great round. Rössler hit par on all of the back nine holes to card a 69 – matching her career low round in addition to being her best round at the Stanford Golf Course.
“Nico is back to herself and her really solid play that she knows she can bring,” McDaniel said. “That was really good to see her even have some more looks at birdies that didn’t quite happen, so I feel like she’s in good position to play tomorrow.”
Sophomore Hannah Suh sits 33rd with a 72-73=145 (+3). Her second round began rocky with boegys’ on four of the first five holes, but the Bay Area native settled down to even it out with four birdies in an eight-hole span to finish the round at 2-over.
Freshman Lucia Gutierrez had yet another solid showing for the Golden Bears, carding a 1-over 72 to jump to 38th on the individual leaderboard with a 74-72=146 (+4). Three bogeys on the front nine were met with two birdies on the back nine and pars on the remaining holes to continue a strong fall season for the first-year collegiate.
“Lucia’s play is really encouraging as a freshman to come in that three spot,” McDaniel said. “She’s been great.”
Carly Childs and Morgan Thompson, a pair of sophomores, shot 3-over and 6-over, respectively, Saturday. Childs birdied the 17th and shot a 75 while Thompson hit birdies on the 2nd and 15th but carded a 77 thanks to a double-bogey on the 10th.
Competing individually, Robert Röller shot an 80 Saturday to match her opening round performance, but the sophomore shot four birdies Saturday with under-par holes on the 4th, 7th 13th and 16th.
“This is a really good field,” McDaniel said. “Overall I would say we’re in position to do something. We’re ready for a breakthrough.”
Competition concludes Sunday beginning with tee times at 7:30 a.m.
