PALO ALTO, Calif. – California opened the final tournament of the fall season in ninth with a team score of 292 (+8) on the first day of the Stanford Intercollegiate held at the Stanford Golf Course.

The Golden Bear lineup of Hannah Suh, Carly Childs, Nicola Rössler, Lucia Gutierrez and Morgan Thompson all shot in the low to mid 70’s as Cal sits within seven strokes of the top five after the opening day of competition.

Suh leads the Golden Bears and sits tied for 22nd on the individual leaderboard after carding a 1-over 72 at the par-71, 6,130-yard course Friday. Suh shot birdies on the 3rd, 8th and 15th holes, but found trouble on the par-4 6th, as did most of the field, with a double-bogey on the hole.

Childs and Rössler both carded 2-over, 73’s Friday to sit 35th individually. Childs began her day with a birdie on the first hole and led Cal with five birdies overall in the opening round (7th, 10th, 15th and 18th). However, Childs also shot a double-bogey on the par-4 6th hole and sandwiched her other birdies with holes over par to finish with a 35.

Rössler had one of the most even days of all the Golden Bears by hitting par on 10 of the 18 holes. The only Bear to hit par on the 6th, Rössler birdied the 5th, 7th and 8th, and her back nine was nearly finished completely on par other than bogeys on the 13th and 16th.

Gutierrez, the freshman from Peru, sits 45th individually with a 3-over 74. Gutierrez birdied the 7th and 16th, but had bogeys on 11, 14 and 17 in addition to being the third Cal golfer to double-bogey the par-4, 6th hole.

Thompson rounded out the California effort with a 6-over, 77 and had the highlight of the day with an eagle on the par-5, 7th hole. Back-to-back double-bogeys on the 9th and 10th derailed an otherwise solid round for the sophomore, who also shot a birdie on the 5th.

Competition resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
