BERKELEY – Paced by three goals from senior All-American Collin Smith and some outstanding goalkeeping from Jon Sibley and Michael Boggan, the No. 5 Cal water polo team topped No. 9 Pepperdine, 11-6, Friday (Oct. 25) in an MPSF night match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. With the victory, the Golden Bears have now won four-straight matches to improved to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Waves dropped to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Cal took control of the contest when it shutout Pepperdine, 2-0, in the second period and got a pair of Smith goals to own a 5-2 halftime lead. From there, the Waves never got closer than four goals as the Bears outscored Pepperdine, 3-2, in both the third and fourth periods. Both junior Sibley and senior Boggan finished with nine saves apiece, including Boggan blocking a five-meter penalty shot in the third period.
Other scorers for Cal included two goals apiece from freshman Farrel South and sophomores Colin Mulcahy and Thomas Agramonte. Junior Luka Ivanovic and true freshman Thomas Carroll added first period goals for Kirk Everist’s squad as well.
"We had some real nice moments tonight, both on defense and on offense," said Everist. "We were making the extra pass and helping out on defense. It was a solid team effort."
The Bears have now won five of their last six matches and will next travel to No. 2-ranked UCLA for a televised match on the Pac-12 Networks on Friday, Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. in Los Angeles. Last season, Cal defeated the Bruins, 12-9, in the 2012 MPSF Tournament semifinal. Earlier this season (Sept. 22), the Bears fell to UCLA, 6-5, in the semifinals of the NorCal Invitational at Cal.
