IRVINE, CALIF. – Cal water polo came back from a 6-5 halftime deficit by outscoring host UC Irvine, 6-3, in the second half on the way to an 11-9 victory over the Anteaters Sunday morning (Oct. 13) at the SoCal Invitational in Irvine. The Golden Bears (10-4) will now face UC Santa Barbara for fifth place at 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
Cal was paced by four goals from redshirt freshman Farrel South, three goals from sophomore Colin Mulcahy and two goals by senior Hunter Gettelfinger. Senior goalie Michael Boggan collected five saves, while junior Blake Kelly and sophomore Thomas Agramonte also notched goals for the Bears.
Gettelfinger scored his two goals in the third period when Cal shutout the Anteaters, 3-0. South had two of his four goals in the fourth period.
"I was happy with the team fighting back from a slow start," said Cal coach Kirk Everist. "We got great offense from (Farrel) South and (Colin) Mulcahy and the team defense held UC Irvine to just two goals in the final 20 minutes."
Everist’s squad is now 2-1 at the SoCal Invite, defeating UC San Diego, 13-7, in the opening match before dropping a 14-8 decision to Stanford on Saturday. In the victory over UC San Diego, freshman Thomas Carroll led Cal with three goals and junior goalie Jon Sibley finished with 13 saves. In the loss to the Cardinal, junior Aleksa Saponjic tallied three goals and Boggan had eight saves.
