FRESNO – Sophomore Camille Cheng captured the 200-yard freestyle and freshman Sophia Batchelor won the 200-yard backstroke to highlight Cal’s swims on the final day of the Bulldog Invitational Saturday.
Cheng touched the wall in 1:51.20, just ahead of Felicity Cann of Boise State, who was right behind in 1:51.12. Meanwhile, Batchelor finished the 200 back in 2:02.72 to out-race Boise State’s Devin Madsen by nearly two-tenths of a second.
Later in the day, Cheng came back to take second in the 100 free in 51.00. A handful of Cal swimmers also placed third in their respective races: Farida Osman in the 100 butterfly (56.69), Melissa Bates in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.61) and Batchelor in the 100 back (58.64). In addition, the Bears’ 200 free relay (Osman, Bates, Mikkel-Ane Stipe, Cheng) and 400 free relay (Osman, Abi Speers, Eva Greene and Taylor Nanfria) were third, as well.
As the Bears did on Friday, the Cal swimmers who made the trip to Fresno saw action in multiple races, including six each by both Greene and Taylor Young.
The full Bear squad will be back in action next weekend when Florida comes to Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal and Florida will face off twice in two days – at 1 p.m. next Saturday and at 9 a.m. next Sunday.
