TIBURON/DAVIS, Calif. – The Golden Bears posted wins in two different tournaments on Sunday, with sophomore Mads Engsted reaching the top-flight singles final of the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis, and California freshman Filip Bergevi winning another match in the qualifying singles bracket at the $100,000 First Republic Bank Tiburon Challenger at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.

The second-seeded Engsted defeated Oregon’s Kevin Farin in the semifinals of the Aggie Singles flight, 6-4, 7-5, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. But the Bear fell in the final to another Duck, top-seeded Robin Cambier, 6-2, 6-0.

In Tiburon, Bergevi posted an impressive victory over sixth-seeded former UCLA star Dennis Novikov, 6-3, 7-6(5). Now a professional player, Novikov ended the 2012-13 college season ranked No. 26 in singles and No. 20 in doubles for the Bruins.

Bergevi next plays top-ranked Philip Bester, a Canadian professional player, at 10 a.m. on center court on Monday, which is Cal Day at the Tiburon Peninsula Club. Fans of the Blue and Gold are encouraged to come out to Tiburon to support the Bears playing in the tournament.

On Monday, those Bears will include Campbell Johnson. The senior will – right after Bergevi’s match with Bester, at approximately 11:30 a.m. – open main draw singles against Peter Polansky, another Canadian pro, on center court.

Also in Saturday’s qualifying singles, Cal senior Ben McLachlan fell against Salvadoran pro and third-seeded Marcelo Arevalo – 6-4, 6-4, and Cal junior Hasier Pastor lost to eighth-seeded American pro Greg Ouellette, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4.

Four singles qualifiers will claim berths in the main draw.

On Monday, Johnson will pair with Malcolm Harrison in qualifying doubles. Later in the week, either Tuesday or Wednesday, McLachlan and Bergevi will take part in the doubles main draw via a wild-card entry.
