DAVIS, Calif. – The second seed in the top flight at the Aggie Invitational, California’s Mads Engsted won twice to reach the quarterfinals on day one of the tournament on Friday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center at UC Davis.
Engsted topped Portland’s Reid DeLaubenfels, 6-2, 6-2, in the Aggie Singles flight round of 32, and then the Cal sophomore defeated Oregon’s Joey Swaysland, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 16. He will take on Santa Clara’s Ashot Khacharyan at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Two more Bears won in the Aggie Singles round of 32, as junior Nikhil Jayashankar beat Thomas Hunt of Saint Mary’s, 6-3, 6-1, and sophomore Wyatt Houghton defeated Kyle Miller of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Chase Melton lost in the round of 32 to San Francisco’s James Tallman, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0. But neither Jayashankar nor Houghton joined Engsted in the quarters, as Jayashankar lost to Oregon’s Kevin Farin, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, and Houghton lost to Oregon’s top-seeded Robin Cambier, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Melton then moved onto the consolation bracket, but he withdrew with an injury before playing Portland’s fifth-seeded Ratan Gill in the round of 16.
In the Big West singles flight, Cal’s third-seeded Jordan Smith beat Sacramento State’s Oliver Anderson, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32, before falling to Nevada’s Ryan Andrada, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 16. Cal junior Jack Sanford fell in the round of 32 to Wil Martin of Saint Mary’s, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1.
Sanford moved to the consolation bracket, beating Adam Luba of UC Davis, 7-6(4), 7-6(0), in the round of 16 to set up a match with another Aggie – Bryce McKelvie – in the quarters, slated for 10:15 a.m. on Saturday.
In the Aggie Doubles flight, Cal’s third-seeded team of Melton and Houghton dropped an 8-4 result to Khacharyan/Sam Bertram in the round of 16. In their subsequent consolation quarterfinal match, the Bears withdrew from facing Pacific’s Alex Hamilton/Eric Cederwall due to injury.
The Cal pair of Sanford and Jayashankar dropped a Big West Doubles round of 16 match to Adam Levie/Parker Kelly of UC Davis, 8-5. The Bears next play the Saint Mary’s team of Hunt/Nathan Lewis at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
