BERKELEY – Cal Poly may have had an idea of what No. 23 Cal was trying to do Thursday night, but the Bears once again simply had too much offensive firepower for their opponent.

Senior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan had 16 kills and 9 digs and junior opposite hitter Christina Higgins added 10 kills and four blocks as Cal beat the Mustangs, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 during the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational.

Cal (6-0), which entered the week ranked fourth in the country in hitting percentage (.336), hit .421 as a team.

The Mustangs (4-3) are coached by Sam Crosson, who was an assistant at Cal for two years before moving to Cal Poly before last season.

“I definitely knew what his strategy and tactics would be, and he knew mine,” Cal coach Rich Feller said. “It was fun. That was not easy. They made us play not as well as we can play in some areas, but we played pretty well in others and made up for it.”

Middle blockers Lara Vukasovic and Lillian Schonewise had six kills apiece while Vukasovic added three blocks. Freshman libero Maddy Kerr led the Bears with 12 digs.

The Bears, who have yet to drop a set this season, are now hitting .349 as a team. A primary reason for the efficient offense has been pinpoint passing from Kerr, Gehan, Michelle Neumayr, Mary McKennon and Sarah Cole in the back row.

“Without the passing, we wouldn’t be successful whatsoever,” said Cal senior setter Joan Caloiaro, who dished out 27 assists. “I made sure I told the passers the reason we are doing so well is because of them. I barely have to move and there are plenty of options. That’s why we are doing really well.”

In the first match Thursday, Santa Clara defeated Kansas State in three sets.

In Friday’s action in the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational, Cal Poly plays Kansas State, followed by Cal against Santa Clara.
