BERKELEY – The California women’s golf team sits first through one and a half rounds in the season opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic after weather forced play to be suspended until Tuesday.

All teams were able to complete the first 18 holes Monday morning before storms caused a delay partially through the second round. Teams then resumed play at the Ptarmigan Country Club after an hour delay until re-occurring weather forced organizers to suspend play with the Bears leading all teams at 10-over.

Senior Nicola Rössler is second on the individual leaderboard at 1-under. She scored a 73 in the first round and was at 46 through 12 holes in the second round before play was suspended. Sophomore Carly Childs is sixth at 1-over through 13 holes in the second round, and classmate Hannah Suh is tied for seventh at two-over through 15 second-round holes.

Junior Morgan Thompson (+8 through 13) and sophomore Roberta Röller (+15 through 15) round out the Bears’ efforts at the stoppage of play.

“The first round was really solid at 291 along with an under-par score from Hannah,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “In the second round, right now Nicola is working on an under-par round, so that’s just good solid play in our top two on the lineup. Carly is following suit and we’re getting a couple of others in there, so it’s been a good day. If we can stay consistent in the last round, I think we have a shot at.”

“When we got back out I thought we played really well and were solid for the five holes we were out there,” McDaniel said of the delay. “We played from sunup to sundown. Tomorrow we’ll finish out the round of three holes and then begin the last. For the first time in the season, we feel solid with this group. We’re making birdies, and if we get more consistent it will be all good.”

Round two will conclude Monday morning and will be followed by the third and final round. The third round will not be re-paired.
