BERKELEY – California closed out its home opening weekend with a 1-0 victory over Liberty Sunday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Andrea Earle scored the lone goal of the match in the 63rd minute to mark her seventh point of the weekend after also scoring two goals and an assist in Friday night’s win. Freshman Nicole Henrikkson tallied the assist for her first collegiate points.
“Andrea (Earle) is just a force and finds a way to get it done. You can see why we were disappointed to not have her last year. It’s a great start to the year. Liberty is a very good team. I’m happy to come out with a 1-0 win. We’re not fully healthy yet, and as soon as we get a few players back we’ll be in good shape.”
It was an afternoon light on offensive opportunities with the teams combining for just 10 shots total and two shots on goal. In addition to Earle’s goal, junior Jordan O’Reilly had the first attempt on frame of the day with a strike in the 17th minute that the Liberty goalkeeper was able to get a glove on to save.
California goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson earned her first shutout of the season in the win and improves to 3-1 along with her team. Liberty falls to 2-1 with the loss.
California hits the road next week with a trip to Chicago, Ill., for games on Friday and Saturday. The Bears will take on Northwestern Friday afternoon before playing a neutral site game against Ohio Saturday afternoon.
