SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – No. 4 ranked Cal (3-0) continued its strong offense at the Triton Invitational, defeating No. 13 Loyola Marymount, 17-7, Sunday (Sept. 8) morning in the Golden Bears’ third game of the tournament. Cal had 12 different players score against the Lions, including two goals apiece from Hunter Gettelfinger, Colin Mulcahy, Aleksa Saponjic, Luka Ivanovic, and Thomas Carrol. Senior goalie Michael Boggan had nine saves.
On Saturday, Kirk Everist’s squad defeated Redlands, 21-3, and host UC San Diego, 13-10. In three matches this season, the Bears have outscored their opponents, 51-20.
In the victory over UC San Diego, Gettelfinger paced Cal with four goals, while junior goalie Jon Sibley had an impressive 14 saves. In the season-opener versus Redlands, senior captain Collin Smith’s four goals led the Bears with 12 different players scoring in that match.
Cal will conclude the Triton Invitational playing UC Davis at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at UC San Diego’s East Pool.
Following the Triton Invitational, the Bears will return to Spieker Aquatics Complex where they will host an Alumni match at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. The Alumni match will be honoring the 40th anniversary of Cal’s 1973 National Championship squad, the first of the Bears’ NCAA-record 13 national crowns. On Sept. 21-22, Cal will be hosting the 16-team NorCal Invitational, featuring the nation’s top collegiate water polo teams.
