Bears to Engage Fans at Cal-Portland State
BERKELEY – Both the California men’s and women’s tennis teams will interact with fans prior to the start of the Cal-Portland State football game on Saturday, Sept. 7, at California Memorial Stadium. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Additionally, the two teams will host their Annual Season Kick-Off event on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Berkeley Tennis Club.
On Sept. 7, the Cal men’s tennis team will be featured in a hospitality event located at the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza (close to Gate 4) at 1:15 p.m. The event is open to open to all Bear Backers at the Cal Club Level ($100) and above. After the Cal band plays, head coach Peter Wright will talk about his program and each player will introduce himself to fans. This is a 10-15 minute event that takes place before each Cal football game, with various groups, including some Cal teams, getting their turns in the limelight.
The Cal women will carry “How Can I Help You” signs and assist fans at the football game who are looking for their seats, concessions stands, where they can rent seat backs, etc., starting from when the gates open through the first quarter.
The day before the football game, both tennis programs will host the Annual Season Kick-Off at the Berkeley Tennis Club located at 1 Tunnel Road in Berkeley. Starting at 3 p.m. on Sept. 6, the teams will hold simulated practices that will include some exhibition play. Dinner in the ballroom will commence at 7 p.m. and include Wright and women’s head coach Amanda Augustus introducing their respective teams and talking about their upcoming seasons. Tickets for the dinner cost $50 each at the door.
Augustus’ women’s team opens 2013-14 competition when it hosts the Cal Nike Invitational from 27-29 at the Hellman Tennis Complex, while Wright’s men’s squad first competes in the Harvard Chowder Fest from Sept. 13-15 in Boston, Mass.
