BERKELEY – Former Golden Bear and Pac-12 standout Theo Robertson has been hired as the Director of Basketball Operations and Mitch Elkins has been elevated to Assistant Director of Basketball Operations for the California men’s basketball program, head coach Mike Montgomery announced.
Robertson, who served as a graduate manager for the Golden Bears last season, will handle all aspects of the administration for the program, including the coordination of team travel, the development and maintenance of recruiting databases, along with the day-to-day responsibilities associated with the program.
“Theo has excelled in each of his roles within our program as both a standout player and a graduate manager the past couple years and I am excited to welcome him back as our Director of Operations,” Montgomery said. “He will be a tremendous asset to our entire program.”
A standout forward for the Golden Bears from 2005-10, Robertson was a two-year captain and the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior on the Golden Bears' 2010 conference championship squad. Robertson completed his career with 1,315 career points, good for 17th on the program's all-time scoring list. He is Cal's all-time leader in career three-point field goal percentage at .440 (154-of-350) and is among the school's career leaders in three-point field goals made, three-point field goals attempted and games played. The forward, who was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection as a senior, was limited by injury during his career in Berkeley where he underwent three separate hip surgeries and was forced to miss the entire 2007-08 season.
Robertson served as an administrative fellow with the Pac-12 Conference in 2012, where he assisted with the league's Sports Management and Championships team, prior to returning to Cal.
Beginning his second year with the Cal men’s basketball program, Elkins was elevated to his new role after serving as the team’s assistant operations manager last season. He will aid Robertson in all aspects of the program, including scheduling, expenses and provide assistance with additional day-to-day responsibilities within the program.
An Illinois native, Elkins completed his undergraduate degree in Sports Management at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012, graduating with honors. During his time at Illinois, Elkins served as a manager for the Illini women's basketball program and assisted with the football program's recruiting operations.
Elkins originally joined the California athletic department in May of 2012 as a member of the Olympic Sports Operations unit, before joining the men's basketball staff.Cal will open the 2013-14 season with an exhibition contest against Humbolt State at Haas Pavilion on Thursday, Oct. 31.
