BERKELEY – The Cal women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish in seventh place in the Pac-12 in a poll of the conference’s coaches.
The Bears earned 59 points from the panel of Pac-12 coaches. Last season, Cal finished in a tie for sixth place in the conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th straight season.
Cal returns five players with starting experience and a libero from last year’s team. Leading the way is senior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan, who was named to the 2013 Preseason All-Pac-12 Volleyball Team on Wednesday. Gehan, a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection in 2010, led the Bears with 3.10 kills per set last season.
The Bears also return junior outside hitter Christina Higgins, who tied for second on the Bears last year with 2.76 kills per set. Setter Joan Caloiaro, who ranked fourth in the Pac-12 with 10.4 assists per set last season, is back for her senior year.
Also returning to the Bears is sophomore Lara Vukasovic, who started seven matches at opposite hitter last season and seven at outside hitter.
Cal also welcomes the No. 21-ranked recruiting class to Berkeley, a group that includes middle blocker Jenelle Jordan, setter Alyssa Jensen and libero Maddy Kerr. All three freshmen were a “Fab 50” selection by Volleyball Magazine.
The Bears open the 2013 season with the Cal Molten Classic on Aug. 30-31. Season-tickets, single-match tickets and group tickets can be purchased by calling (800) GO-BEARS, visiting CalBears.com or in person at the Athletic Ticket Office at Haas Pavilion.
