Cal freshman Jacob Pebley tallied his second bronze medal of the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, placing third in the 200-meter backstroke Monday (July 15) with a time of 1:57.43. Pebley, who had earned a bronze in the 100-meter back July 11, trailed only the United States’ John Conger (1:55.47) and Japan’s Yuki Shirai (1:56.95) in the 200 back final.

On Sunday, Pebley had captured his opening prelim of the 200 back with a mark of 1:59.72, and then was second in his Sunday semifinal with a time of 1:58.71.

“This was Jacob’s fifth 200 back he had swam in the past two and a half weeks, so he was not necessarily totally happy with his time today,” said Cal coach David Durden. “But having the experience of winning another medal in a major international competition and representing his country, and representing it well, is an experience he’ll cherish coming back from Russia.”

Besides bronze medals in the 100 and 200 back at the World University Games, Pebley had finished fourth in the 200-meter backstroke (1:56.73) June 26 at the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, trailing only two U.S. Olympians – 2012 bronze medalist in the 200 back, Ryan Lochte (1:55.16), and 2012 gold medalist in the 200 back Tyler Clary (1:55.58) – and future Cal teammate Ryan Murphy (1:56.37).

Pebley owned one of the nation's top times in the 200-yard back for the majority of his freshman year and ending up third in the event at the NCAA championships and establishing a new Cal school record with a time of 1:39.71, Pebley was seventh in the 100 back at the 2013 NCAA meet as well.

ESPN3.com will broadcast swimming footage starting at 8 a.m. PT daily from July 10-16. Results and information for the 2013 World University Games swimming competition can be found by clicking Here.
