Cal freshman Jacob Pebley concluded his impressive performance in the 100-meter backstroke Thursday (July 11) at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, capturing the bronze medal with a time of 54.11. Pebley had entered the finals with the competition’s third-best time after winning both his opening heat and his prelim race on Wednesday.

Pebley, a native of Corvallis, Ore., swam 54.32 in his first heat, and then clocked a time of 54.14 in the prelims. In the finals he finished behind Japan’s Yuki Shirai (53.70) and Australia’s Ben Treffers (53.76).

"We are very proud of Jacob's bronze medal in the 100 backstroke,” said Cal coach David Durden.  “Representing our country and earning his way onto the medal stand is truly world class. This should set-up well for his 50 and 200 backstroke later in the meet."

Pebley will be competing in the 50-meter back prelims on Friday, and the 200-meter back prelims on Sunday.

It has been a strong summer season for Pebley so far. On June 26 at the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, he finished fourth in the 200-meter backstroke (1:56.73), trailing only two U.S. Olympians – 2012 bronze medalist in the 200 back, Ryan Lochte (1:55.16), and 2012 gold medalist in the 200 back Tyler Clary (1:55.58) – and future Cal teammate Ryan Murphy (1:56.37).

Owning one of the nation's top times in the 200-yard back for the majority of his freshman year and ending up third in the event at the NCAA championships and establishing a new Cal school record with a time of 1:39.71, Pebley was seventh in the 100 back at the 2013 NCAA meet as well. will broadcast swimming footage starting at 8 a.m. PT daily from July 10-16.
