BERKELEY - Cal baseball had three-hit games from Devon Rodriguez and Chris Paul, and Andrew Knapp led off the fourth inning with a home run to give the Golden Bears a brief 4-3 lead, but Stanford held on for a 9-8 win Friday night (May 17) in the first game of the three-game Pac-12 series at Evans Diamond.

Cal (22-29, 10-18) made a valiant comeback attempt against the Cardinal (27-21, 12-13) in the bottom of the ninth inning when it scored three runs on an RBI single by Paul, a passed ball by Stanford catcher Brant Whiting and an RBI ground out by Jacob Wark to get within a run. Unfortunately for the Bears, Cardinal reliever Garrett Hughes was able to strikeout Brian Celsi and get Devin Pearson to fly out to right field with a runner on third base to end the game.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Stanford scored three runs off of Cal starter Ryan Mason in the top of the fourth inning. The Bears came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Rodriguez and a two-run single by Wark off of Cardinal ace Mark Appel (9-4, 7.0 innings, nine hits, five runs, four earned runs, one walk, 11 strikeouts).

Cal then got its only lead of the contest, 4-3, when Knapp led off the fifth inning with a homer. But Stanford ended up scoring in each of the next four innings. The Bears got a run in the seventh inning on freshman third baseman Mitchell Kranson's sacrifice fly.

Besides Rodriguez and Paul's three-hit games, Knapp finished with a double and a homer, and freshman left fielder Celsi had a pair of hits and threw a Cardinal out at the plate in the fifth inning. Wark finished with three RBI.

The Bears will next host Bay Area rival Stanford in the second game of the three-game conference series at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 18. All games of the Stanford-Cal series are broadcasted on KNEW 960 AM and KALX 90.7 FM.
