Box Score

In another game in which Cal out-hit No. 13 Arizona State, the Sun Devils had the big hit when Nathaniel Causey broke a 6-6 tie with a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to help ASU to a 10-7 win over the Golden Bears Sunday (May 12) at Evans Diamond. Similar to Saturday's contest, Cal came back from a 4-0 deficit behind home runs from Devon Rodriguez and Chris Paul.

The Bears (22-28, 10-17) out-hit the Sun Devils (32-15-1, 14-10), 13-9, and had three-hit games from junior catcher Andrew Knapp and sophomore second baseman Brenden Farney. Cal had won the first game of the series, 3-1, Friday night, before falling, 10-9, Saturday and finally, 10-7, Sunday.

On Sunday, ASU had jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bears came back with an unearned run in the second inning, and junior designated hitter Devon Rodriguez's two-run homer in the third inning to get within, 4-3. The Sun Devils added single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, yet Cal kept fighting, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on sophomore shortstop Paul's lead-off homer and an ASU wild pitch, and a run in the fifth inning on freshman third baseman Mitchell Kranson's sacrifice fly to left field to tie the score, 6-6.

The score remained tied, 6-6, through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings until the Sun Devils loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning off of Bear relievers Kyle Porter and Eric Walbridge, and Walbridge yielded the grand slam to Causey. Cal was able to push across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Rodriguez's RBI ground out to second base.

The Bears will next host Bay Area rival Stanford in a three-game Pac-12 series at Evans Diamond with game times 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, 6 p.m. Saturday, May 18 and 1 p.m. Sunday, May 19. All three games of the Stanford-Cal series are broadcasted on KNEW 960 AM and KALX 90.7 FM.
