McLachlan, Johnson Fall in NCAA Singles
May 22, 2013
URBANA, Ill. - With bad weather in the Midwest delaying the action and moving some matches indoors, California's Ben McLachlan and Campbell Johnson both completed their matches but lost in the round of 64 at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Johnson's season will continue on Thursday, when he and senior co-captain Christoffer Konigsfeldt compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship in Urbana.
McLachlan, ranked 38th in singles, lost to 12th-ranked Blaz Rola of Ohio State, 6-2, 7-6(4), while the 60th-ranked Johnson fell to Oklahoma's 58th-ranked Guillermo Alcorta, 6-2, 6-4.
"It was pretty windy outside today, which made conditions harder for both of us," McLachlan said of his match. "I thought the quality of the match was pretty good. I wasn't disappointed with my match. I had my chances."
The Cal junior was serving at 3-1 in the second-set tiebreaker when officials moved his match indoors due to the threat of lightning. McLachlan and Rola played the rest of the way indoors as it began raining in Urbana, and the Golden Bear ultimately lost the tiebreaker and the match.
With his season now over, McLachlan reflected on Cal's season, including the run to the round of 16 in the NCAA team tournament, in which the Bears fell to eventual champion Virginia.
"We had some bad losses that we hadn't really had the last couple years," McLachlan said. "But we also got some big wins. It was pretty big we made it to the sweet 16 after traveling to Florida, so we were pretty happy. We put up a fight against Virginia, but they were too good."
Johnson and Konigsfeldt will play Auburn's sixth-ranked Daniel Cochran and Andreas Mies in the round of 32/first round at a time TBA. Konigsfeldt and Johnson form the nation's 26th-ranked doubles team that also claimed the 2013 Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year award.
