VALENCIA, Calif. - California finished 10th overall at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships with junior Nicola Rössler finishing 24th individually to lead the Bears at the Valencia Country Club.
California had a three-round score of 302-308-315=925 (+61) with the lineup comprised of Rössler, senior Morgan Thompson, freshmen Hannah Suh and Carly Childs. USC won the team title with a 280-292-282=853 (-11) while also have the top two individuals finishers led by Annie Park's seven-under 70-70-69=209. Washington and UCLA rounded out the top three teams.
Rössler has been solid for the Bears throughout the week, beginning the tournament with an even 72 in the first round and flirting with it again in the second round before a double-bogey and triple-bogey with three holes to go derailed her to a second-round 77. In Wednesday's final round, Rössler started four-over through nine holes before settling down on the front nine to finish with a three-over 75 on the day to finish in the top 25 individually for the second consecutive year.
A pair of first-time Pac-12 Championship golfers were the second and third placing team members as Suh shot a 76-77-78=231 (+15) and Thompson shot a 74-78-83=235 (+19). Suh was consistent throughout the day, carding par on 13 of 18 holes. A double-bogey on the 18th hole prevented her from matching her best round, but the freshmen finished 39th overall in her first conference championship.
Williams with a 237 and Childs with a 242 rounded out the Cal effort Wednesday as all five Bears placed in the top 50.
The Bears will await a bid for the NCAA Regionals to come in the next week. Regionals will be held May 9-11.
