Beavers Edge Bears, 1-0, to Stop Sweep
April 21, 2013
Oregon State managed to subdue tenth-ranked California 1-0 to hand the Golden Bears their first shutout loss of 2013 in the final game of the series Sunday in Berkeley.
Against Beaver pitched Tina Andreana (6-5) in game one on Friday, the Bears racked up nine hits. That wasn’t the case Sunday as Cal produced just two hits – one from sophomore Breana Kostreba and another from freshman Khala Taylor – while seven batters struck out. Andreana walked six batters, but the Bears were unable to capitalize in several scoring situations and left eight runners on base, including a bases loaded situation at the bottom of the seventh.
The lone run on the board came at the top of the fourth inning, starting with a single from designated player Ashley Sanchez. A base hit from left fielder Lea Cavestany and a Golden Bear error sent Sanchez to third before she scored on a ground out by first baseman Natalie Hampton.
The loss is Cal’s third-straight one-run loss. Kostreba led the Bears in the series with a .571 batting average, and she and sophomore Cheyenne Cordes and junior Victoria Jones all tallied a homer to up the Golden Bear home run total to 47, the fifth-highest total in program history.
California returns to the road Friday to begin a series against No. 2 Arizona State at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Saturday and Sunday’s games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
