TEMPE, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked Sun Devils used an onslaught of home runs to down the tenth-ranked Golden Bears 10-2 in five innings in game one of the series at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
Arizona State used six long balls for a total of 11 hits off of California pitchers freshman Nisa Ontiveros and sophomore Nikki Owens. Ontiveros was charged with the loss to drop her record to 4-2. Sun Devil pitcher Dallas Escobedo (23-4) limited the Golden Bears to four hits and two runs plus three walks while striking out nine.
Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes notched the biggest hit of the night for Cal - a two-run homer at the top of the fifth that also scored freshman Khala Taylor. Cordes went 1-for-1 with two walks and upped her season-best home run total to eight.Taylor, sophomore Breana Kostreba and junior Victoria Jones each registered a hit to go 1-for-2.
Arizona State went up by six early with back-to-back home runs from the first two batters at the bottom of the first. The Sun Devils loaded the bases before second baseman Sam Parlich punched a roundtrip ticket home. The Sun Devils used home runs at the bottom of the second, fourth and fifth to end the game with the run rule.
