BERKELEY - No. 17/16 Stanford held No. 12/13 California to just one hit to overpower the Golden Bears 17-2 in five innings on Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field. The Cardinal wins the series following Friday's 13-5 win against Cal.
Senior Lindsey Ziegenhirt registered the team's only hit - a two RBI home run deep into center field - to go 1-for-2. Stanford's Kelsey Stevens limited the Bears by allowing no walks while fanning 12 batters and allowing just one earned run. Using freshman Nisa Ontiveros (4-5) and sophomore Nikki Owens, Cal's pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs and six walks with three strikeouts as the Golden Bear defense committed three errors.
The trouble started right off the bat as Stanford's first three batters loaded the bases on singles and the runs started pouring in. The Cardinal scored five runs on base hits, including a pair of two RBI singles, and added another score on an error. A three RBI homer by first baseman Kayla Bonstrom keyed the inning to make it 10-0 entering the middle of the first.
In Cal's half of the first inning, the Bears rallied as junior Britt Vonk reached on an error. Ziegenhirt followed with a blast deep past centerfield to add two runs for Cal.
The Cardinal dominated the rest of the game, scoring four in the top of the third with three RBI singles and a score on an illegal pitch. A wild pitch at the top of the fourth allowed another run across to make the score 15-2, and Stanford ended with a two-run fifth inning with an RBI single and fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Cal will honor its seniors - Ziegenhirt and Jolene Henderson - Sunday in the regular-season home finale, which begins at noon.
