VALENCIA, Calif. - California sits 10th after two days of competition at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships held at the Valencia Country Club.

The Bears hold a two-day score of 302-308=610 (+34) and are led by junior Nicola Rössler who sits 23rd on the individual leaderboard.

"We had a great start with +2 at the nine which was looking good," California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. "I felt like we played it well yesterday. We started on Hole 10 and playing those first nine at +2 is really encouraging. Tomorrow we want to come out and put the two rounds together and do our best to move up."

Rössler, who began the day tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard, continued her strong play by counteracting two early bogeys with birdies on the 17th and 1st to sit even through 10 holes. The junior then hit par on her next five holes before seeing a double-bogey 7th and triple-bogey 8th derail what was a top five round and push her to a +5, 77 at the conclusion of the second round. Through two rounds of golf, Rössler leads the Bears with a 149 (+5).

"On this course if you have two shots that are slightly errant you can put yourself in trouble," McDaniel said. "Nico didn't recover as well as she normally does on those shots. It just happened to be two holes that were back-to-back and she had a chance to birdie on 18, which was a great rebound. I know she's fired up after those mental errors and wants to get back out there and try one more time on this course."

Hannah Suh matched Rössler with a five-over 77 Tuesday. The freshman stands 46th individually after two rounds with a 153 (+9). Suh hit birdies on the 12th and 15th holes.

Freshman Carly Childs once again held strong command on the back nine to open the day by hitting a birdie on the 11th and staying the course to stand at one-under at the turn. However, the par-4 sixth hole once again caused problems as Childs carded a double-bogey on the hole for the second day en route to finishing at four-over (76).

Morgan Thompson, like Rössler, began the round strong and sat even after nine holes but shot six-over on the front nine to finish the round with a 78. The sophomore is 36th individually with a 74-78=152 (+8) after two rounds. Senior Jacqueline Williams hit birdies on the 5th and 11th to card a six-over 78 at the end of the second round.

"They're all handling it pretty well," McDaniel said of her relatively young lineup with three in the lineup at Pac-12's for the first time. "They are young players and the more experience they have they'll get better with every tournament like this. We're consistently mediocre and we're ready to be consistently good."

The Bears conclude competition Wednesday at the Valencia Country Club.
