EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Malaina Payton finished 10th in the women's long jump and Cal's men's 4x100-meter relay took 22nd on the opening day of competition at the NCAA Track & Field Championships Wednesday at Hayward Field.

On an afternoon when most marks were wind-aided, Payton jumped 20-7 on her second attempt for her best distance of the trials. However, only the top nine finishers advanced to the finals, and Payton was a mere 3/4 of an inch out of the final position. She completes her season with a PR 21-1.50 from her Big Meet victory in April.

Cal's 4x100-meter relay, comprised of Julius Travis, Tom Blocker, Chad Jones and Dash Oliver, finished seventh in its heat and 22nd overall with a time of 40.68. The Bears were racing in the relay at nationals for the first time since they qualified back in 1977 after their qualifying performance at the NCAA West Preliminary meet two weeks ago.

Although Cal did not put any team points on the board on day 1, the Bears have several more opportunities to score. Cal's two Pac-12 champions - Ray Stewart and Hammed Suleman - will be in action Thursday. Stewart is one of the favorites in the men's 110-meter hurdles, while Suleman set a PR in capturing the conference long jump crown. In addition, women's triple jumper Amanda Hunter will be on the runway Friday.
