Box Score

BERKELEY - No. 12/13 Cal's final home series ended in a sweep as No. 17/16 Stanford claimed its third victory over the Golden Bears, 7-5, Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field on Senior Day.

Cal matched its six hits and five runs produced on Friday, but could not capitalize with the bases loaded in two different innings to edge Stanford for a win in the series. Stanford's Kelsey Stevens (14-7) pitched the complete game, allowing four walks and sending seven Bear batters back to the dugout. Freshman Vanessa Alvarez earned her first career start in the circle and delivered two strikeouts with three walks, nine hits and seven earned runs in a 5.1 inning performance. Freshman Nisa Ontiveros relieved her for the 1.2 remaining innings, allowing one hit, walk and strikeout.

Freshman Khala Taylor matched her career-high 3-for-4 total at the plate for one run and one RBI while sophomore Danielle Henderson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Junior LaRisa Jones also tallied a hit, added to her run scored and one walk.

Stanford again scored at the top of the first, quickly capitalizing on a walk by first baseman Kayla Bonstrom using a two RBI homer from shortstop Jenna Rich. The Bears did not let the 2-0 score rattle them, and Taylor started the game with a leadoff double. Henderson smacked a single to the right and advanced on the throw, giving Taylor more than enough time to touch home plate and cut the lead to 2-1.

The score remained the same through three innings before Stanford's Erin Ashby hit a solo home run to add another run on at the top of the fourth. Cal answered with a run of its own as sophomore Breana Kostreba capitalized on an error to get on base, then made her trip around the diamond with a walk and a wild pitch followed by a single by Taylor to bring her home.

With a 3-2 lead at the top of the sixth, Stanford pulled away with four more runs after an error, sac fly and two RBI single. Cal attempted a five-run comeback at the bottom of the seventh as Jones singled, then advanced to second on a base hit by Taylor. A fielder's choice plated senior Lindsey Ziegenhirt and sent Taylor out of the game as Jones made it safely to third, then home on a throwing error by the Cardinal. With Ziegenhirt on base, Henderson, who had been hitting home run-caliber foul balls all day, finally knocked one into the left field bleachers to make the score 7-5.

Before the game, Cal celebrated the accomplishments of Ziegenhirt and Jolene Henderson for Senior Day in the home finale.

The Golden Bears close out the regular season in Seattle, where they'll meet the University of Washington starting Thursday at 5 p.m. Friday's game at 7 p.m. and Saturday's 3 p.m. game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
