TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 5 Arizona State clinched a series win over No. 10 California with an 11-0 mercy-rule shutout in 4.5 innings Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils were once again dominant as sophomore Nikki Owens and freshman Nisa Ontiveros allowed a combined nine hits. Owens (2-1) gave up eight runs and six hits in her two-inning start while walking three without a strikeout. Ontiveros gave up three hits and runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Five Golden Bear batters successfully connected with the ball but could not salvage a run from ASU ace Mackenzie Popescue, who allowed just one walk but fanned three in her complete-game effort.
The runs against the Golden Bears racked up quickly with a pair of three RBI homers and a two RBI home run in the first two innings, giving Arizona State an 8-0 lead. At the bottom of the third, the Sun Devils added three more runs using a two RBI single by shortstop Cheyenne Coyle and an RBI single by first baseman Bethany Kemp in bases loaded situations.
Cal returns to Farrington Stadium Sunday at 3 p.m. for the final game of the series, which will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
