ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
The eighth-seeded hosting Michigan Wolverines pushed California into the loser's side of the Ann Arbor Regional bracket, shutting out the Golden Bears 5-0 Saturday at Alumni Field.
Cal outhit Michigan, connecting with five balls off the arm of Sara Driesenga (28-6). Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes, senior Lindsey Ziegenhirt and junior Britt Vonk each notched a hit, and junior Ashley Decker built on her recent success at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing. Driesenga struck out eight Golden Bears and walked three in her complete-game performance.
Senior Jolene Henderson (31-10) started on the mound for Cal, matching her season-high four walks in a three inning, two-hitter performance with no strikeouts. Freshman righty Nisa Ontiveros pitched the final three innings, whiffing four without allowing a walk with her own two-hitter.
The Golden Bears got some good looks in their at-bats but a pair of errors doomed Cal to the losing side of the bracket with three unearned runs at the bottom of the second. Second baseman Ashley Lane drew a leadoff walk to start the inning and caught a lucky break on the next play, reaching second safely on a throwing error as catcher Lauren Sweet touched first with a bunt. Both runners moved on a passed ball before Driesenga walked to load the bases. Another error plated left fielder Sierra Lawrence as all the baserunners moved for the first run, and a ground-out and single brought two more runs home for Michigan's 3-0 lead.
The bottom of the fourth brought another run across when Sweet launched a leadoff home run to make the score 4-0. Ontiveros entered the game to relieve Henderson after the fourth-inning homer before Sweet added another leadoff homer to her tally at the bottom of the sixth inning for the 5-0 final.
Cal gets the chance to face Michigan again on Sunday if the Golden Bears beat the winner of Central Michigan vs. Valparaiso this evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET.
