STANFORD - California freshman Hannah Suh may be at her first NCAA Regional tournament, but the San Jose native did not show any signs of inexperience Thursday afternoon after carding a one-under 70 in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional being held just miles from her home at the Stanford Golf Course.
Combined with a two-over 73 by junior Nicola Rössler, Suh has helped pace the Bears to a 297 (+13) at the end of the first day to put the Bears eighth on the team leaderboard with 36 holes remaining.
Thursday marked Suh's sixth round this season at or below par and was one stroke shy of matching her career best of 69. With California beginning the day on the 10th hole, Suh did not let an 11th hole bogey derail her and went on to birdie her next hole en route to holding steady at even par through nine holes.
On the front nine she did her damage early by carding a birdie on the par-5 1st to go with a birdie on the par-four 5th. A bogey on the 3rd allowed her to finish her first 18 holes with a 70, one of just six of the 126 golfers present to shoot under par on the opening day.
Rössler continued her strong play down the stretch with what was an even round throughout the day with two birdies offset by four bogeys. The junior birdied the par-three 8th and the par-four 15th to finish the day in the top 25.
Sophomore Morgan Thompson was also competing in her first NCAA Regional and finished the day with a five-over 76. A rather steady performance through the first nine holes was offset only by consecutive bogeys on the 13th through 15th, but the sophomore had a more eventful front nine with birdies on the 4th and 9th to go with four bogeys.
Senior Joi Pentin made her return to the lineup and competed at her first NCAA Regional, finishing at seven-over (78) through 18 holes. Pentin's last appearance in the lineup was at the Spartan Invitational from March 4-5, but the senior showed no signs of it by hitting par on 12 of her 18 holes, a double-bogey on the 18th hurting an otherwise solid day on the course.
Classmate Jacqueline Williams shot an 80 (+9) due to shooting four over in her last four holes of the day. Williams will look to thrive Friday back on the same course that she averaged 74.5 strokes in her previous appearance at the Peg Barnard Invitational earlier this season.
The Bears tee off on hole one at 7:30 a.m. Friday and will be paired with Miami and Florida State.
