REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Racing as `Team Jill' once again, No. 2 California women's rowing swept all four races from No. 10 Stanford in the Big Row Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears retained the Lambert Cup, awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between the two crews, for the fourth-straight year.

Cal once again dedicated the day to the honor of Jill Costello as the Bears donned their aquamarine (Costello's favorite color) uniforms and competed as `Team Jill' in the race along with Stanford.

"It means a lot to represent `Team Jill' very well," California head women's rowing coach Dave O'Neill said. "Since we have been doing this in 2010, it has always meant a lot for everyone on our team. Hopefully we made Jill proud today."

It is the second-straight year Cal swept Stanford in the Big Row. Since 1997, the Bears have defeated Stanford every year except 2002 and 2009. Cal opened the series winning five of the first six competitions. Cal holds the all-time series lead over Stanford, 27-11, dating back to 1976.

The Golden Bears' varsity eight won by open water over Stanford, setting a new course record in the process with a time of 6:14.7. Stanford was six seconds behind with a time of 6:20.7.

"It was a totally re-designed varsity eight from last week," O'Neill said. "We did some testing with them on Wednesday and it looked like it was going to be pretty good and it was really good, setting a course record today."

Cal's varsity eight completes the open-water victory over Stanford.

In the second varsity eight, Cal posted a time of 6:23.2 to defeat Stanford (6:28.0). The Bears recorded an open water victory in the varsity four with a time of 7:11.6 to Stanford's 7:30.8. The Bears' novice eight posted an open water win over Stanford, 6:48.0 to 7:07.8.

"The second varsity eight was down three-quarters of a length in the first 500 meter, but we knew they had some really good base speed and they stayed in their rhythm," O'Neil said. "They kept on plugging away and pulled away for the open water victory. Coach [Vanessa] Tavalero made some changes in the novice eight with a different stroke and a different six seat and they looked really good. The four looked really good as well, they had one of the fastest times we have had in that boat."

Outside of the main four races, Cal and Stanford also squared off in the second varsity four with the Bears winning 7:39.7 to 7:53.4. Cal's third varsity eight also raced the Cardinals' lightweight varsity eight with Stanford winning, 6:37.9 to 6:48.2

Following the Big Row, Kara Kohler was named the recipient of the Jill Costello Scholar Athlete Award, honoring an individual who displays the courage, perseverance and positive attitude just as Costello did.

Cal will have next weekend off as the Bears take final exams this coming week. They will next be in action on Sunday, May 19, in the Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma. You can follow the Golden Bears throughout the season on their official Twitter handle @CalWCrew.
