Nickerson had a strong redshirt freshman season in his first action at Cal in 2013 and had moved into the team’s starting middle linebacker position before suffering a season-ending injury in the 10th contest of the campaign that also caused him to miss all of the team’s 2014 spring practices. Nickerson tied for third on club with 64 tackles and tied for fourth with 5.0 tackles for loss (-16 yards) in his first season of action in 2013, while he was tied for second with both one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He is expected to return to action in 2014.
