Gibson has been limited to six games off the bench and four tackles during his first three seasons at Cal primarily due to injury with all of his statistics coming as a 2013 sophomore. He also missed 2014 spring practices due to injury but is expected to be ready to start the 2014 season. Gibson spent the first two-plus seasons of his career as a linebacker before being moved to safety during the 2013 campaign but has returned to linebacker.
