Shaw is looking to follow up a promising 2014-15 with a breakout 2016 spring after missing last fall due to injuries. His up-and-down Cal career has included sharing individual medalist honors at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate after tying for second in his previous event at the Windon Memorial in the fall of 2014 among seven finishes in the top 25 in his first eight events of the 2014-15 season. But he has also missed many events due to illness and injuries including the entire 2015 fall campaign. Shaw learned during his redshirt season as a true freshman at Cal in 2012-13 when he named the team's Most Improved Player despite not seeing any action when the Golden Bears arguably put together the best season in the history of the sport at the collegiate level.
