BERKELEY - Danielle Henderson hit a three RBI home run to help the No. 6/5 Golden Bears to a 6-0 win in their opening game of the Pac-12 season against Utah at Levine-Fricke Field Friday.
California notched all six runs, along with five hits from its eight-hit game, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The sophomore Henderson went 1-for-2 plus a walk while sophomore Cheyenne Cordes went 2-for-3 and junior Lindsey Ziegenhirt, sophomore Breana Kostreba and freshmen Khala Taylor and Vanessa Alvarez also contributed one hit each in their three at-bats.
Senior Jolene Henderson (20-2) moved within one pitching win of matching Cal all-time wins leader Michele Granger with a three-hit performance capped with one walk and four strikeouts. Her Utah counterpart, Mariah Ramirez (4-4), gave up three runs and five hits with two walks. Utah's Naomi Amu also came in to pitch less than a half inning for the Utes but still allowed all three batters faced to find the ball for a total of three runs on three hits.
Both teams went scoreless through four and a half innings before the Bears rallied at the bottom of the fifth to score every run of the game. Alvarez was first to get on base via an error by Utah shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina, moving to second on a base hit to right field by Taylor. Cordes singled to load the bases for Decker, who hit her own single to left field to bring Alvarez across with Taylor right behind her.
On the next play, Ziegenhirt dished out yet another single to score Cordes. With Decker at second and Ziegenhirt on first, D. Henderson went deep for her fourth long ball of the season giving the Bears a cool 6-0 advantage that would eventually give them their first conference win of the season.
The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. Cal will host adopted teammate Barbara "BeBe" Wiggs and her family for the annual Friends of Jaclyn (FoJ) day, in support of children with pediatric brain tumors. For more information on the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, visit www.friendsofjaclyn.org.
