BERKELEY - Eighteenth-ranked California opened its Pac-12 dual-match season with a 6-1 rout of No. 73 Washington State on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Freshman Lynn Chi clinched the match with her 6-1, 6-0, singles win over the Cougars' Ksenia Googe. The Golden Bears improved their record to 6-4 (1-0 in the Pac-12), while WSU fell to 10-3 (0-1 Pac-12).

Cal also improved its all-time record against WSU in dual matches to 16-1.

"To get our first conference win under our belts, back on our home courts, I thought they did a good job today," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said of her Bears. "

In the latest meeting in the series, Cal quickly won the doubles point when the 30th-ranked duo of Chi and junior Anett Schutting beat Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina, 8-1 - with a Schutting smash putting away the match - on court one and then the Cal team of sophomore Laura Posylkin and junior Kelly Chui defeated the pair of Googe and Andjela Kankaras, 8-5, on court three.

With Cal sophomore All-American Zsofi Susanyi sitting out another match due to a minor injury, freshman Klara Fabikova - who with Susanyi normally forms the 26th-ranked doubles team in the nation - joined senior Tayler Davis to add an 8-3 win over Lize Leenknecht and Olga Musilovic on court two.

Senior Annie Goransson - playing a singles match for the first time since last fall also due to a minor injury - did not show any rust in her 6-0, 6-0, blanking of Charlotte Koning on court six. Fabikova, ranked No. 117, followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Kankaras on court three, and then Chi secured the match at 4-0 with her court-two triumph.

Augustus said of Goransson, who had played in doubles in Cal's previous two matches, "Considering this was her first (singles) match back in quite a while, she looked great. I was really pleased. It was great. First matches back after any kind of layoffs are tough, and I think she did a really good job just being patient with herself. Pretty good score. For a tennis player, it's never perfect. You always want to do a little bit better. But that was really great for her first match back on court in singles."

"I was really excited to be out playing again," Goransson said. "Being out playing singles next to Alice and Tay and all my teammates out on the court, I enjoyed every minute of it."

The Bears earned two more points when Davis beat Luzina, 6-1, 6-0, on court four and on court one - with the fifth-ranked Susanyi out - eighth-ranked Schutting topped Vasilieva, 6-0, 6-2. The Cougars earned their lone point when Cal junior Alice Duranteau - splitting the first two sets with Musilovich on court six - fell in a super tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(10-8).

Cal continues its Pac-12 schedule when it hosts No. 31 Washington at noon on Saturday, March 9, at Hellman.
