PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - It was a clean run-rule victory for No. 8 University of California softball team, who shut out Georgia Tech 8-0 in six innings Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs. The Golden Bears improve to 8-2 on the season.

Friday's game was chock full of heavy hits from the Bears, who tallied six doubles and capitalized on nine walks for an effective combination of eight runs off of nine hits. Cal's seniors once again produced powerful plays for the Golden Bears, as Jolene Henderson (7-2) pitched another near no-hitter and Lindsey Ziegenhirt hit two doubles to go two-for-three.

California tacked three runs on the board early when junior Victoria Jones hit a ball deep into center field. Though the ball might originally have been a double, an error by Georgia Tech's center fielder sent the ball bouncing off her glove and beyond the fence, forcing Jones and sophomores Cheyenne Cordes and Breana Kostreba in.

Another two runners crossed home plate in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Britt Vonk reached first on a walk, and a swift double down the left line by Kostreba offered Vonk the perfect opportunity to touch home. Though Jones grounded out to the pitcher in her at-bat, Kostreba advanced to third, making it an easy score when Ziegenhirt thumped a double of her own.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, junior Ashley Decker earned her first hit of the season with a single through the left side, advancing to third with a double from Jones. Though junior Jordan Wallace grounded out to second base, Decker was able to get home, and Jones earned her own trip home on a double from sophomore Danielle Henderson on the very next play. One more double from J. Henderson for a run from her younger sister sealed the Bears' win.

Cal takes the field again on Saturday in a doubleheader against Maryland and Illinois. The Bears face the Terps at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Illini at 5 p.m.
