UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The California Golden Bear field hockey team (4-7, 0-2) was handed another defeat by the Penn State Nittany Lions (11-3), 6-2. Sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel and senior forward Lauren Livingston scored the goals for the Bears.
The Nittany Lion offense proved too much for the Golden Bears to handle on the afternoon. In total, they fired 35 shots in this morning action. Freshman goalie Joelle van Hoorn made a personal best 17 saves on the day, but three first half goals on a scramble and two breakways, as well as an early second half goal on a nifty pass from the right side, led to the Lion victory.
Cal did its best to answer in the second half. Kruggel cleaned up an inital save off of a penalty corner to score her team leading ninth goal of the season. Later in the period, Livingston converted a corner play off the stick of senior defender Deanna Kennedy to tally her third goal of the season. However, it was not enough, as PSU was able to score twice more to finish the game at 6-2.
Cal finishes the two game road trip by splitting the pair. They next return home to play the University of Pacific Tigers on Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m.
