BERKELEY - The California Golden Bear field hockey team beat the Longwood Lancers, 5-1. The Bears will now advance to the semifinal round of the NorPac Tournament and will rival Stanford tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Senior forward Rachelle Comeau earned a hat trick in today's victory and freshman goalie Joelle van Hoorn made 11 saves to seal the win. The Lancers actually performed better than the Bears in every offensive category except goals. Longwood outshot Cal 19-12 and earned six penalty corners to Cal's two.

"The team played a very average first half but responded will in the second," sid head coach Shellie Onstead. "I feel good moving forward and I'm glad we're facing Stanford in the semifinals."

Coach Onstead was referring to a slow start for the Bears. After 24 scoreless minutes, Comeau launched a deep pass from the left side of the field that senior forward Claire Dougherty intercepted for the re-direct into the upper right corner of the cage, sending the Golden Bears into the half, 1-0.

In the second half, Cal pushed on the accelerator and never looked back. In the second minute of the half, sophomore midfielder Lara Kruggel fired a shot from the 25-yard line that was just nicked by Comeau for her first goal. Comeau tallied her second score of the night with an assist from sophomore midfielder Caroline Struijk. Next, freshman forward Nicole Wallstedt tapped in a slow-roller from senior defender Deanna Kennedy, putting the Golden Bears on top, 4-0. Cal tallied its fifth and final goal of the night when Comeau completed her hat trick on a penalty stroke with less than nine minutes remaining in the contest.

Longwood converted on a penalty corner to get on the board with just over seven minutes left to play. But it was too little, too late as the Bears held on for the 5-1 victory.
