BERKELEY - Junior guards Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs combined for 50 points to lead the California men's basketball team to an 89-80 victory over San Francisco State in an exhibition contest Tuesday evening at Haas Pavilion.
Crabbe led the way with 28 points, including four three-pointers and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Cobbs poured in 22 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Both guards recorded five assists in the contest.
Cal and San Francisco State played even through the first 10 minutes of the game, before the Bears surged out to a 15-point first-half advantage at 38-23 thanks to a 16-3 run midway through the first period.
Cal took a 15-point lead into the break at 49-34 with Crabbe collecting 18 of his 28 points and Cobbs contributing 16 of his 22 points in the first 20 minutes.
The Bears pushed the lead to 18 (55-37) in the second half before the Gators chipped away at that advantage with a 9-0 run to get within eight points at 61-53 with 13 minutes remaining. Cal held off the SF State charge and built the lead back to double digits with a 12-point advantage (85-73) with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Gators used a 7-0 run late to cut the lead to 85-80 with 1:07 to play, before Crabbe and Cobbs sealed it with a pair of free-throws each to give Cal the nine-point victory.
The Gators were led by Nefi Perdomo, who contributed 23 points, including four three-pointers in the game.
Cal opens its 30-game regular season slate this Sunday, Nov. 11, against CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. For the first time in school history, every regular-season contest will be televised, beginning with Sunday's contest on the Pac-12 Networks.
