BERKELEY - No. 1 USC broke open a 2-2 tie at halftime and the No. 5 Cal women's water polo team dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Senior Breda Vosters scored two goals for the Bears (12-3). Goalie Savanna Smith made nine saves.
The first quarter almost ended in a scoreless tie but Cal called timeout after a USC exclusion with 56 seconds remaining. The Bears capitalized on the 6-on-5 when Vosters scored for a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans (13-0) tied it up early in the second quarter then went up 2-1, but Cal senior Emily Csikos scored with 2:04 left before halftime to knot the score once again at 2-2. It was the 199th goal of Csikos' career, moving her into a tie for second place on Cal's all-time list.
USC scored a pair of goals early in the third quarter, but a goal by freshman Pippa Saunders sliced the Trojan's advantage to 4-3 with 4:51 left in the third. The Trojans went on to score three more goals in the period to lead 7-3.
After the Trojans extended the advantage to 8-3, Vosters scored for the second time with just under seven minutes remaining in the fourth. Junior Ashley Young closed out the scoring for the Bears late in the final period.
Before the game, the Bears honored former All-American and four-time Olympian Heather Petri in a special ceremony to retire her No. 13 cap. Cal Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour made the presentation.
