Box Score

IRVINE, CALIF. - Despite two triples from junior right-fielder Jacob Wark, the Cal baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 25-ranked UC Irvine Friday night (Feb. 22) at Anteater Ballpark. The Golden Bears, who were out-hit 13-6 by UC Irvine and were plagued by three errors, dropped to 3-2. The Anteaters improved to 4-0.

Wark's two triples tied a school record with 11 other players for triples in a single game, last accomplished by Chicago Cubs outfielder Brett Jackson, who accomplished the feat on Feb. 23, 2008 versus Utah Valley. Wark, who is also a tight end on the Cal football team, led-off the fifth inning with a triple down the right field line off of UC Irvine starter Andrew Thurman (6.0 innings, five hits, three runs, one walk, nine strikeouts) and scored on freshman first baseman Mitchell Kranson's sacrifice fly to left field. In the seventh inning, freshman third baseman Max Dutto singled to left field and scored on Wark's RBI triple to right center field to tie the contest, 3-3.

The losing pitcher for Cal was junior right-handed reliever Trevor Hildenberger, who came in and got the final out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but with the score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning, yielded RBI singles to UCI catcher Ronnie Schaeffer and designated hitter Jerry McClanahan.

The Bears scored the opening run of the game in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI single by junior center fielder Derek Campbell. But, the Anteaters responded with a run in the bottom of the third when shortstop Chris Rabago tripled off of Cal's senior left-hander Justin Jones (4.0 innings, six hits, two earned runs, no walks, four strikeouts) and scored on Jeff Steven's groundout.

UCI then jumped ahead, 3-1, with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI bunt and an unearned run on a Jones' fielding error, before the Bears were able to battle back with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

The Bears next face UC Irvine in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday, Feb. 23 at Anteater Ballpark. The series final will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.
