FULLERTON, Calif. - It took six innings and an error for the No. 7/8 California Golden Bears (12-2) to put two runs on the board, but it was enough for Cal to edge Northwestern (8-7) 2-0 in a close defensive contest at the Easton Invitational Friday in Fullerton, Calif.
Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes on second on a hit by pitch followed by a steal, junior Britt Vonk went in on a sacrifice bunt. Both Vonk and Cordes took advantage of an error by the Northwestern catcher as they came home in the same play.
The Bears were on guard heading into the seventh, as 15 of Northwestern's runs in last weekend's tournament were scored in the seventh inning or later, but the Bears used a three-up, three-down inning to seal the victory. Senior Jolene Henderson (10-2) pitched all seven innings, striking out nine while allowing just one walk and two hits.
California returns to the diamond at 1:30 p.m. today for a contest against Cal Polytechnic.
