BERKELEY - California's Zsofi Susanyi and Cecilia Estlander won singles titles and Anett Schutting-Annie Goransson as well as Estlander-Kelly Chui won doubles crowns as the Cal Nike Invitational wound to a close on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
Susanyi, a sophomore ranked fifth in the nation and seeded No. 1 in this event, defeated second-seeded Schutting, a junior ranked No. 22, in the Gold Flight singles final, 6-0, 6-2. The champion advanced past Santa Clara's 41st-ranked and fourth-seeded Katie Le in the semifinals, 6-2. 5-7, 6-3. Schutting beat Saint Mary's sixth-seeded Jenny Jullien, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in their semifinal.
Estlander, a sophomore, wound up with the Blue Flight singles title when, after leading Minnesota's Tereza Brichacova, 5-0, the Golden Gopher retired.
Schutting and Goransson - the third-ranked team and top seed in Berkeley - posted a score of 8-4 to win the Gold Flight doubles title over Saint Mary's Jullien and Audrey Leitz. The duo of Estlander and Chui, a junior, won the Blue Flight doubles crown by a score of 8-4 over teammates Tayler Davis and Laura Posylkin.
"With only really a couple weeks of training, I was very pleased with what we saw across the board," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said of her team's performance over the last three days. "One reason I like this event is to see the entire team play. Everyone showed improvement - from the new kids in the few weeks we've had them to the returning kids based on what we wanted them to work on over the summer or work on since last season ended till now. We're pretty pleased with what everyone accomplished."
The Bears next compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships from Tuesday, Oct. 2, through Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
