BERKELEY - The No. 15 California and No. 13 Missouri women's soccer teams treated a national television audience to a high-scoring game with the Tigers emerging victoriously 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. In their first-ever Pac-12 Networks broadcast, Golden Bears struck first with a goal in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime but a late surge but the Tigers proved too much to handle.
After the Bears led 1-0 for over 40 minutes, the Tigers knotted things up with a goal in the 51st and then went ahead 2-1 when they scored in the 59th. Playing one-goal down for 15 minutes, Betsy Hassett equalized in the 74th but a Mizzou goal two minutes later cost Cal dearly. The Bears looked to capitalize on chances brought about by two Tiger yellow cards in the final six minutes, but they could not find the back of the net.
Emily Kruger played the full 90 minutes between the posts, making six saves, four of which came in the first half. McKenzie Sauerwein made two first-half stops and then four in the second half to thwart Cal's attack.
At the halftime break with the Bears owning a 1-0 lead, the teams were dead even in shots with eight apiece. It was the same story in the second half with both teams taking 11 shots.
