BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears played 69 minutes of scoreless field hockey, but it was in the final minute that a loose ball in front of the cage was pushed across the line by Chelsea Armstrong to give the Northwestern Wildcats a victory, 1-0. Rachelle Comeau led Cal with three shots on the day.
The match was hotly contested and tightly played throughout its entirety. California and Northwestern tied in both shots (8) and penalty corners (6). Goalie Joelle van Hoorn had to make one more save (5) than her Wildcat counterpart (4).
Cal was not without its chances. Northwestern was penalized with two yellow cards and two green cards during the match. But the Bears were unable to capitalize on the man advantage.
"It was a tough loss. When you get under a minute you think you're headed to overtime," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "They were just able to keep the pressure on long enough. It was very unfortunate."
It was the second time this season Cal has lost by a margin of only one. The Golden Bears play next on Monday, Sep. 3 when they take on Bryant University at 1 p.m.
