Sept. 22, 2012

ST. HELENA, Calif. - California remained perfect in singles action at the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Saturday at the Meadowood Napa Resort, winning four matches to run its team tally to 8-0. The Golden Bears also split its two doubles matches; their doubles record stands at 2-2 after the second day of the three-day tournament.

The field of 32 players includes 24 college players - including 124th-ranked senior Christoffer Konigsfeldt, senior Riki McLachlan, 16th-ranked junior Ben McLachlan and freshman Mads Engsted from Cal - and eight members of the USTA Junior National Team.

On Saturday, Konigsfeldt defeated No. 46 Daniel Whitehead of Texas, 7-6(5), 6-4; Riki McLachlan beat Illinois' Brian Page, 6-4, 6-1; Ben McLachlan topped Harvard's No. 104 Denis Nguyen, 7-5, 6-3; and Engsted bested Stanford's Robert Stineman, 6-2, 7-6(4).

"We have an older group that are playing well," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "I know the college players are doing a little bit better than the juniors this year, but that's the natural ebb and flow of this event. It's been fascinating to watch the level of the juniors against the college guys."

In doubles, the pair of Engsted and Riki McLachlan beat the USTA's Joseph DiGiulio and Henry Craig, 8-4, while the 23rd-ranked duo of Konigsfeldt and Ben McLachlan fell to Illinois' Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski.

The competition ends on Sunday, with Cal's first matches of the day involving Ben McLachlan playing Soren Hess Olesen of Texas and Engsted taking on Georgia's Eric Diaz at 8 a.m.

Event Format: Each school is represented by four players to compete alongside the eight juniors, and the 32-man field is split into eight pools featuring three collegians and a junior. Following three matches in pool play, the eight pool winners will compete in a single-elimination, 10-point tiebreak tournament. The winner of the tournament will receive a USTA-sponsored wild card into a USTA Pro Circuit event that is yet to be determined.

The juniors were selected by USTA Player Development based on ATP rankings (if applicable), national rankings and results, and a selection of younger players for developmental purposes.
