SACRAMENTO - Malaina Payton surpassed 20 feet despite a strong headwind to capture the women's long jump to lead a small contingent of Golden Bears at the Hornet Invitational Saturday on the Sac State campus.
On a day that featured gusts up to 20 mph, Payton's winning mark of 20-1.00 came while running into a wind of 2.6 meters per second. Teammate Jaci Powell was second at 18-11.25 with an even stronger wind against her (3.0 meters per second).
Amanda Hunter placed second in the women's triple jump with a top effort of 42-0.50, which is her personal best under all conditions. However, the mark was aided by a wind of 3.1 meters per second and won't improve her legal PR of 41-7.75.
In the men's high jump, Brian Carmichael, who completed his collegiate eligibility for Cal during the indoor season, finished first at 6-9.75. The Bears' Harrison Steed also cleared 6-9.75, but was given second place based on more misses. In addition, Nick Ridge was third (6-8.00) and Mike Tracy fourth (6-8.00).
The Bears only competed in two events on the track - Payton took eighth in the women's 100 meters (12.02), while in the women's 100-meter hurdles, Powell was fourth (14.19w) and Sunny Margerum 23rd (16.03w).
The Bears will be in action again next Saturday at the Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State.
