Next Cal Game: Sunday vs. Stanford

LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 California women's soccer team rebounded from tough loss to the No. 2 team in the nation by defeating USC 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. In the 74th minute, freshman Ifeoma Onumonu scored her fourth gamewinner and 11th goal of her budding career to power the Golden Bears to their eighth Pac-12 win of the year.

On Friday, USC took No. 1 Stanford to overtime, only to fall 1-0. Equally as challenging, the Bears suffered a 3-0 loss against No. 2 UCLA in Westwood.

"We fought very hard today against a feisty USC team," Amanda Glass said. "We kept working for each other and never gave up - that's how we got the goal and kept them from scoring. This win means everything to us. We were able to bounce back from a difficult loss Friday and find our rhythm again. I am very proud of this team and our performance today."

Neither the Bears nor the Trojans could get on the board in the first half with Cal taking eight shots to USC's six. At 73:11, Onumonu carried the ball up the field and shot it to the far left post.

"The goal started off a corner and Betsy hit it forward, and from there, I was determined to get the ball out of our half," Onumonu said. "I just took a shot on goal and luckily, it went through the keeper's legs and into the goal."

The Trojans posted a 9-6 shot ratio over the Bears in the second half but could not muster a goal.

Emily Kruger made three saves in 90 minutes of work between the posts while USC keeper Caroline Stanley had three as well but gave up the sole allowed goal.

"This win means a lot to our team, especially after the loss to UCLA," Onumonu said. "It prepared us to go into next Sunday and fight for the win against Stanford."

Next Time on the Pitch:

Cal closes its regular-season campaign against the toughest opponent of all - rival and No. 1 Stanford. The Bears and Cardinal square off in the annual Bay Area Derby on Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. The game will take place at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley and will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks. It will also be the final home game for Lauren Battung, Amanda Glass, Betsy Hassett, Lauren Hein and Samantha Walker - all of whom will be honored.
